What traditions do you and your family have for the holidays? Do you add Christmas lights to your home each year? Is there that one special ornament that you set out during the holidays?  That yummy recipe from grandma that you recreate yearly?

Traditions build the wonders of memories for years to come.

When I reflected back, almost all our fun times and memories were centered on family and food. I wondered about this and researched it a bit more. I found this interesting article from Eartheasy that explains how eating together as a family brings us all closer to one another.


I also found, doing projects together builds memories that lasts a lifetime. 
Our mother was always so resourceful using everyday objects to make the most beautiful ornaments for our tree and home. To this day, I try to do the same and it’s so much fun. Pinterest is a great source for ideas.
Now for those wonderful meals…
When I was growing up, our parents made the holidays so special with delicious dinners.
Homemade noodles were always at our dinner table. I remember our mom and dad working the dough, cutting them into strips, and draping them everywhere they could, to dry them out before adding them into a huge pot of favored broth.


Homemade Noodles 
2 beaten eggs
2 T butter
1/4 t salt
2 cups flour
Mix eggs, salt, butter. Add flour. Roll out on flour surface. Form dough into a jelly roll. Cut in strips. Dust them with lots of flour. Dry them out for 2 hours before cooking. Add a few at a time to prevent sticking, to boiling turkey or chicken broth. Reduce to a gentle boil and stir for a minute or two. Cook until most of liquid is absorbed about 15 minutes or until done. 
Tip: For the turkey or chicken broth, cook turkey or chicken necks in 2- 3 quarts water or enough to cover them.

Season as desired.

Our niece has taken over this tradition which our family looks forward to every year. 
Another tradition our family loved to put out what we called a “Gumdrop Tree.” It's a little plastic tree we filled with Gumdrop candy. We still continue this fun tradition today.

Christmas Eve is filled with a family dinner of laughter and fun. A staple that must be made is a dish we call, “Velveeta Chicken.” I spoke of this meal in my book launch a few weeks ago and will share it again here.

VELVEETA CHICKEN
1 chicken, cooked, cooled, and bones removed
1/3 Lg. box of Velveeta Cheese
1 can of Cream of Chicken Soup
½ cup milk
1 box of chicken flavored Stove Top Stuffing.  PREPARED (Name brands also work well.)

Put pieces of chicken in the bottom of a 9x13 inch pan. Melt 1/3 of the box of Velveeta Cheese, 1 can of Cream of Chicken Soup, and the ½ cup milk in a sauce pan. Stir so it won’t stick. Pour this mixture over the chicken. Spread the PREPARED stuffing over the top. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.

Important step: Make the stuffing ahead of time. If you see recipes out there that say to “just add stuffing,” it won't work.

Not that we ever need dessert but, these are a giant hit at our home around the holidays. 
Coconut Mounds Bars

Crust
2 cups graham cracker crumbs
1/4 cup white sugar
1/2 cup melted butter


Topping
1 (14 ounce) sweetened condensed milk
2 cups flaked coconut
1 – (12 ounce) semi sweet chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

Combine the graham cracker crumbs, sugar and melted butter or margarine. Mix and pat into the bottom of one 9 x 13 inch baking pan. Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 15 minutes.

Toss the flaked coconut and the chocolate chips together and add. Drizzle the condensed milk. 
Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 15 minutes or until slightly brown and all is melted.

Cool a bit before cutting into small squares. These are very rich.

Christmas Day


No large breakfast for Christmas morning. I make cinnamon and orange glazed rolls. Our morning is spent opening presents which can take many hours as each one opens a present as we all watch. It’s so much fun seeing the gifts our family picks for each other with loving thoughtful items.

The rest of the day is spent time with the family enjoying snacks, and our favorite, bagel, cream cheese, and ham sandwiches.
